- In 1864, six Salt Lake prison escapees join a wagon train headed for California but tensions between inmates and settlers complicate the perilous voyage.
- In the summer of 1989 tens of thousands of tourists from communist East Germany came to Hungary. They were deeply disillusioned because they felt they had no future in East Germany. There was no freedom, no choice in the shops, salaries were low and they could not travel except to Eastern Europe. They wanted to go to a prosperous and free West Germany but they could not get passports, so they hoped that by travelling through Hungary, the least suppressed country of the Soviet Block, they could cross the Iron Curtain into Austria and then travel on into West Germany. For them the Hungary of twenty years ago was the new east-west passage.

Boarding a Russian cruise ship starts his journey across the Northwest Passage. A stop off at Beechey Island takes him to three graves from Franklin's ill-fated 1845 Arctic expedition. Another stop off at King William Island reveals how Franklin's expedition came to a rather gruesome end. Hitching a lift with an ice road trucker at Invuik sends him down the Dempsey Highway. A quick pit stop in McPherson takes him to the graves of four unfortunate Mounties. A helicopter flies him to the astonishing beauty that is the Tombstone Territorial Park. His hotel in the old Gold Rush town of Dawson City turns out to be a former brothel. A trip to where gold was first found in the area sees him pay a visit to a man who still works in the industry.
